Raw Feeders Beware: The War Is On
There’s a war being fought … the war on raw food …
Last week, the Maryland Department of Agriculture issued a stop sale order on Stella and Chewy’s freeze dried chicken patties dog food, which tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes.
Yeah, I agree that listeria and salmonella in dog food can be an issue for us (but not really for our pets). . .
. . .but I’ve got a bigger issue with this.
Just A Coincidence?
This recall comes just weeks after the FDA stated they would start cracking down on harmful pathogens in pet foods in the upcoming months …

Recently, I read that the FDA was going to start testing raw brands. I spoke with a local pet store and found out that they'll just show up, take food out of the freezer and test it - it can no longer be sold, because it's been opened. No recourse for the stores.
Really? What's going on? I usually don't go for conspiracy theories, but I'm starting to think that the big brands are behind this push to test the raw brands, which makes me so happy that I make my own raw.
Pet owners are becoming more aware and educated. We are eating healthier and that's sprinkling down to our 4-legged famill members, which means less Purina and Pedigree and more farm raised, grass fed real proteins from humane, ethical farms.
Although the bottom line of these big brands can't be hurting too much, they see the trend and are getting ahead of it by pushing for more testing.
Or maybe it's just a coincidence. Stella & Chewy's was first. I wonder who will be next.

The thing is, the FDA doesn't give two hoots about the safety of pet food. Someone with lots and lots of money is putting the pressure on. We all know this.

Pet food consisting of material from diseased animals or animals which have died otherwise than by slaughter, which is in violation of 402(a)(5) will not ordinarily be actionable, if it is not otherwise in violation of the law. It will be considered fit for animal consumption.

Well I've got news for them. If I won't eat it, they're not getting it either.
