Honest Kitchen - Grace (Turkey)
« on: July 15, 2012, 11:39:08 AM »
4 pounds = 21 cans
Approved by the FDA to use the term "Human Grade."  Pretty rare for a pet food.
Complete and balanced.  Just add water.  (Only their Preference (for dogs) brand requires added meat.)

Grace Ingredients:
Dehydrated cage-free turkey, eggs, pumpkin, potatoes, parsley, dandelion greens, cranberries, rosemary, tricalcium phosphate, choline chloride, zinc amino acid chelate, vitamin D3 supplement, vitamin E supplement, potassium iodide, potassium chloride, iron amino acid chelate, copper amino acid chelate.

10 year anniversary this month.  All products 20% off.

Looks like MUCH better ingredients, then I've seen in most canned foods.  ??

New Packaging! Slight Recipe Changes.

We have increased the copper levels slightly so that Grace meets AAFCO standards for kittens! We are also replacing the dandelion greens with chard.

Amber likes it. The ingredient quality is excellent, and the carbs aren't too bad. I am using it right now because I barely have time to sleep, let alone thaw and prepare cat food.

I bought the Grace (Turkey) and Prowl (Chicken) for the cats, to add to our rotation.  The cats like it.  Lacy dog likes the dog version also.

We made the entire 4lb box in advance and then froze meal size portions... to make life easier.

According to Dr. Pierson's carb chart, that I looked at ....after the fact:

Calorie %
Prowl is 26 protein, 54 fat, and 20 carbs.
Grace is 29 protein, 61 fat, and 10 carbs.

Dry Matter %
Prowl - 35, 30, 26
Grace: - 40, 35, 15

Those numbers kinda suck.

It's the potatoes.  But if it's just a small portion of the rotation, like once a week, or one meal a week even, it should be okay.

Since I don't totally trust myself with an all homemade raw diet, I wanted to add as many raw and/or dehydrated brands possible into our rotation.  With all the good things concerning Honest Kitchen...I never expected those numbers!

I was just comparing the full ingredient profile of HK, with a plain raw whole carcass commercial raw food (Carnivora), and it looks odd that the protein would be higher in the Honest kitchen? but that is based on 1 cup, which for a cat you only feed about 1/2 cup a day.  Fat is pretty high in Turkey and Chicken regardless, its too bad they don't have Rabbit, or Elk, which would be lower in fat.

Sojos has some mixes too that are supposed to be pretty good. Dunno. I looked at a lot of the pre-mixes after Vlad first got sick, and I had to nix them all b/c potatoes have so much potassium in them.

Dr. Harvey's is also some mixes and pre-mixes. Dr. Harvey's Oracle Grain-free Beef is the only kind I can get them to eat straight out of the bag without adding a whole lot of their regular meat with it. I haven't re-checked that b/c we've not taken any RV trips in over a year now with the way things are with my parents.

You will not see Taurine listed in the ingredients for our dehydrated cat food because it is contained naturally in the USDA human-grade chicken as it should be. This is not supplemented synthetically.

While I understand what they mean, I think I would still add a taurine supplement to the food.  There's no way to know what the dehydration process does to the taurine in the meat, and I personally don't think adding a supplement would hurt.   2cents

I agree!
Even if everything else about this food was perfect... I would not feed it as a main diet, without adding Taurine.
Taurine is one of those ingredients... better safe than sorry.
