I've forgotten how long. . .
« on: February 12, 2015, 11:32:44 AM »
For being allowed to set up a blind on our land for his young son, a neighbor gave us some of their deer meat this year for the boys.

I've forgotten how long I'm supposed to let it sit in the freezer before feeding it to them. It was given to us on Jan 3 this year already frozen, so I have no idea how long it sat in the processor's freezer before then. I decided I'd treat it as if Jan 3 was the "frozen-on" date.

I know I have to let it sit in the freezer for a certain amount of time, but how long is it? I've forgotten, and can't remember where I saw it.

I want to say 1 month, but I don't remember, either.   :(  Sorry!

The question was asked in a hunting forum:

I have a friend that hunts deer... I'll ask him.

Hmmm yes, but that's for cooking.  I think I've read somewhere that wild meat should be forzen for 6 months.  Let me see if I can find out where I read that

That's what I'm afraid of. Not letting it stay in there long enough to kill everything.

Only come up with one answer so far, from a raw forum I used to spend a lot of time in

Quote
I don't think it was depending on the game, but three weeks is needed to kill trichinella. I don't know if that is a parasite potentially in deer meat.

I think I would go longer and make sure the freezer is below minus 10 Fahrenheit

The general Google answer seems to be 3 weeks.  I'd go 6 months, to be on the safe side.  ;)
