Okocat Litter
« on: June 24, 2016, 10:04:27 PM »
I received a coupon for a free box of this litter... the Natural Wood Clumping one.  I checked out their website.  There are other varieties.  The following is partial info on the wood clumping litter.

I know a lot of people in the UK like that litter.  Didn't know it was available here.

I think it is new here... or at least new to the store where I grocery shop.
The possibility of pine turns me off.  Although I have no idea if litter made from any wood is a good idea or not.   :-\

I did pick up my free box and two others.  There are different kinds.  I didn't get the pine one.  I got the Natural Wood.  It is possible pine is in it... according to their website.

Anyway, I put some by itself in one litter box and I mixed it in with Dr. Elsey's in two others.  All boxes are being used as normal, so there doesn't seem to be any issues.  It does clump well.  The pieces are rather large (compared to Dr. Elsey's Precious Cat) so it doesn't "sift" through the scoop as well.  I don't have a problem with that though.  I'd rather toss some unused litter, rather than chance leaving bits of yuck behind.

There is absolutely no dust.  Love that it is light weight.  It doesn't seem to track any more or less then current litter.  That surprised me, because it is so light weight.  That last light weight litter I tried ended up all over the house.  It was nasty!

With feeding raw, I don't really have odor issues.  So I have no idea how well it does or doesn't work in that area.

I can smell wood when my nose is stuck in the litter box.  In general, it isn't a strong smell though.  And I am VERY sensitive to ANYTHING smelly.  Also, Lola has a very sensitive sniffer.  Years ago, we thought she had allergies.  Long story short... dusty and scented litters were the cause.
Last time I changed litters to a light one, her nose didn't like it.
I've had the Okocat in boxes for a few days now... no runny noses and no sneezing going on with Lola or any of them.

Another plus...
I let the litter run low and then dump and clean.  With the other litter, if it wasn't deep enough, I would have pee balls that would stick to the bottom of box.  Or if someone peed in a corner of the box.  Those pee balls would require a sledgehammer to remove.  None of that going on with this litter.

The litter reminds me of oatmeal flakes.  Here is a close-up

I'm not 100% comfortable that pine wood is possibly being used in this particular one, but it is probably a "trade-off" for not using clay litter.   :-\

One thing I don't like about this litter... I can see it easier on dark tile floors!  It looks like oats.  I keep thinking there is food on the floors.  Not that litter is a better choice...

It does look like oats!  This is pine litter? Or some other kind of wood?

There is a pine version.  I won't use that one because of the pine.  The one I use is the Natural Wood Clumping.  https://www.healthy-pet.com/okocat/okocat-natural-wood-clumping

However, all their "flavors"  Silly7 can contain SOME pine.  :(

What kind of wood?  I still like the SmartCat grass litter but Queen Eva is the only one who uses it, and she only pees in it, not poop.
