Dead animal smell
« on: July 17, 2017, 06:28:14 AM »
Every summer, at least once, something dies within the walls. My gosh the stench.  At first I never seem to realize right away what it is and tear the house apart looking for the smell.  Then it finally comes to me.  I've got a bowl of white vinegar out, left it out all night and it seemed better this morning, but as soon as I dumped the vinegar it came back so I put another bowl out.  My house smells like some weird twisted kind of barbecue house. Nothing I can do but wait for it to decompose. Thankfully it's not in my bedroom.  The smell originates from down the stairs I think, so in the wall or floor down there somewhere.

The smell is finally gone.  But wow, the bowl of vinegar worked really well.  Of course my house smelled of vinegar the whole time but that was preferable to rotting mouse carcass.

I stopped topping up the bowl yesterday and it's all evaporated now, and I don't smell dead animal any more. Just the usual horrible smelling carpet smell. But I've been defeated by that.

I am SO glad for you that dead mouse smell is gone!
My house always smells like vinegar.  It used to bother me, but I kinda like it now.  I know it is a clean smell.   Silly7  Like Pinesol used to be... before i knew it was making the animals sick.
I sure wish you could pull up your carpet...

Unfortunately there's nothing under the carpet but particle board or I would have years ago.

Once the vinegar smell was completely gone the dead rotting smell is back.  So I've put it back down there.  My gosh it is foul..

I don't know how you do it.  I'm SUPER sensitive to smells and I know you are too....   HeadButt

Actually I think it's a new rotting smell.  It's not coming from downstairs any more.  Downstairs smells nice and fresh again. It's somewhere up here in the living area. It's damp this afternoon which makes it that much stronger.

The second dead animal smell is now gone. Hope that's it for the summer.
