Iams Recall

Thanks to TAPF friend the Food Bug Lady (aka Phyllis Entis/ http://efoodalert.wordpress.com/), there seems to be an Iams pet food recall.  I could find no notice of this on the Iams website or the FDA website.  Here are the details...

The Price Chopper website states the following...
"Select Varieties Iams Pet Foods (recalled Nov. 25, 2011)
Iams Original with Chicken Cat Food
UPC 1901403915
Lot Number 12794177D3
Size 6.8 lbs.

Iams Original with Chicken Cat Food
UPC 1901410504
Lot Number 12794177I5
Size 4 lbs.

Iams Lamb Meal with Rice Dog Food
UPC 1901403735
Lot Number 12794177J4
Size 15 lbs.

Reason for Recall:
The product is being recalled due to elevated aflotoxin levels."

'Elevated aflatoxin levels' could be a very dangerous situation.  Here is some additional information on aflatoxin/mycotoxins:  http://www.truthaboutpetfood.com/articles/more-than-you-ever-wanted-to-know-about-mycotoxins.html

Rec'd this today, in an email, from Truth About Pet Foods. I copied and pasted it:

I'm assuming that we're talking about kibble, correct?
Has Phyllis contacted the FDA?
Peraps I'm being cynical, but burying the recall in Black Friday was probably intentional.
Fortunately for us, we have Phyllis and you to uncover such buried treasures.
Thanks Phyllis, thanks Susan!
BTW, LOVE the new TAPF look! I miss the Caped Crusader though.

Hi Mollie,
I emailed my veterinary contact at FDA, but don't expect to hear anything before Monday (holiday weekend and all that).

I don't feed canned food but the dry. I'm checking my bags.

When you feed dry gain-based foods, you are getting a 4-way hit of toxins, fed every day over the lifetime of your pet.
First, you have the 1) mold that is inherent in grains used in pet foods (because it has sat the longest: pet foods being at the bottom of the list of uses for grains); 2) the bugs (storage mites) that are attracted because they feed on the mold; 3) when the mold (a plant) is attacked (eaten) by the mites it protects itself by secreting toxins (aflatoxins, micotoxins).  Plus, you dog or cat eats the carcasses and feces of these mites who live and die in the grains.
A recall due to an elevated level of aflatoxins is a serious and dangerous issue.

Dear Dog Parent,

In the past few hours, Price Chopper has mysteriously removed the Iams pet food recall notice the retailer had originally posted Friday on its website.

The company has thus far offered no explanation for its actions. Frankly, I'm as baffled as all consumers by this bizarre event.

Please forgive me for my earlier post. I'm so sorry for alerting you.

Just my theory, at this point FDA- Iams probably just figures-

To heck with it at this point! Same old *****,  different year, ho hum... Just a few Internet people would chat about it amongst themselves anyway so who cares?   *So Info disappears and only the people who know NOT to feed it notice anything. (*Seriously, isn't this the truth?)

A voluntary recall of Iams cat food was announced by parent company Proctor and Gamble on June 9th.
Products affected are all varieties of Iams ProActive Health canned food for cats and kittens in 3 and 5.5 ounce cans with expirations dates of Sept. 2011 to June 2012 printed on the bottom.
The company initiated the voluntary recall after tests found insufficient levels of Thiamine or B1.  The vitamin is essential to support the health of the central nervous system
