SAN JOSE, Calif. (Legal Newsline) – A Ventura County, California man is suing several pet food manufacturers and sellers over claims they falsely labeled certain products as being made in the U.S.

Sean Randall, individually and for all others similarly situated, filed a class-action lawsuit Jan. 7 in the Western Division of the Northern District of California against Merrick Pet Care, doing business as Castor and Pollux Natural Petworks LLC; Pet Appeal One LLC, also known as Castor and Pollux Natural Petworks LLC; Nestle USA; Nestle Purina Petcare; and Does 1-10, alleging violations of California's Unfair Competition Law and California's Consumer Legal Remedies Act.

The suit states the defendants falsely labeled certain dog and cat food and treat products as made in the U.S., when these products allegedly include vitamin, mineral and amino acid packs that contain ingredients sourced outside the U.S. . .continued

It will be interesting to see how this plays out.  Pet Food (Feed) mfg have toooooo much leeway that allows them to totally BS the buyer.  IMHO  of course.  :)

More on it from Dogs Naturally Magazine:

Class Action Lawsuit Filed Against Merrick And Purina

This is some of the best news I could ever share …

A $5 million class action lawsuit has been filed by Sean Randall of Ventura County, California against Merrick Pet Care Inc, Pet Appeal One LLC and Nestle Purina Petcare.

Mr Randall claims these companies have been labeling dog and cat food and treats as made in the United States when they contain ingredients sourced from foreign countries, including tapioca as well as vitamin, mineral and amino acid packs.

But these companies aren’t alone …

… nearly every commercial canned or bagged pet food (and even some raw pet foods) contains these kinds of vitamins and minerals.

So why is this a problem?

Premixes: The Pet Food Wild Card

Remember the melamine pet food recalls?

In 2007, 150 major brands of pet foods were recalled after several thousand dogs and cats died. The FDA reported these recalls were the consequence of combining melamine and cyanuric acid, which reacted in the pets eating these foods, causing kidney failure.

As many as one in six animals eating these tainted foods died. And thousands more became very ill.

So what does this have to do with this lawsuit?. . .continued

Is it even possible to get all required vitamins and minerals from the US?

From what I've been lead to understand, no. But labeling "Made in the USA," means people think otherwise. They don't give a single thought about sourcing.

You have a point.  BEFORE I learned anything about the pet food industry, I would have assumed ALL ingredients were sourced from the USA.

"Sourced In The USA" would be better wording.  Better wording for consumers, not so much for the pet food industry.

The taurine I buy from Alnutrin comes from Japan.  None of their supplements come from China.
