Studying the microbiome of your pet
« on: November 12, 2016, 10:50:06 PM »
UC Davis project.  Someone posted about it in the IBD group.  You can have your pet's microbiome analyzed by sending in a poop sample.

Read more about it here:

Several people have already ordered the kit.  I am interested but thought I would wait to hear how it goes for them.

Here are some other articles about the project

I wonder if all of this has something do to with those "fecal transplants" that some Dr's have started doing?

Yes, somewhere in there there is talk about, after doing the testing, they may recommend their poop pills for your pet to help with gut microbiomes.  I haven't read it all yet, but there has been a lot of about that lately.

We offer microbiome assessments for pet owners and we will soon be offering free trials of carefully screened kitty poop pills (from our veterinarians' cats).

Use coupon code IBDKITTY and save $30 off the cost of the kit. Which makes the kit $19. Plus $8 shipping.  I think I'm going to go ahead and do it.  Just for the heck of it.

Done.

Confession:  I didn't read the links, just this thread.  The test sounds interesting.  One thing:  I hope those "veterinarian's cats" supplying the poop are raw-fed kitties.  Just my  2cents

I'll be interested to hear about the test results.  Please keep us posted!

Well I'm not going to be doing any poop pills for Mazy cat, even if they recommend it.  That is way WAY to avant-garde for me haha! I just want to see what their evaluation is of her poop.

I've got my kit! Ran into a snag though.  The instructions state to open the poop to a cross section and scoop a small amount out with the swab and place in the little tube. A sunflower seed amount. (to avoid a sample with litter on it)

Gloves, swab and tube supplied.

I was all set to do it this morning.

Problem is, the inside of Mazy cat's poop is all fur. This is going to be tricky.  funny2

No results yet but I wanted to update that a number of people in the IBD group are using the poop pills (pilot trial program_ with some success.  These are cats with non styop diarrhea, which, thankfully, is not Mazy cat's problem.
