Looking for advice on a milk thistle supplement
« on: December 07, 2018, 03:37:59 PM »
My mother's newly adopted senior dog has high liver enzymes.  I'm thinking of ordering a milk thistle supplement (milk thistle is protective of the liver and helps the liver heal and regenerate) for Mom to give the dog, and am trying to decide between the following:

https://www.amazon.com/d/Pet-Supplies/Certified-Organic-Milk-Thistle-Powder/B079FJ1LHL/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1544218412&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=herbsmith+milk+thistle+for+dogs&psc=1

or this one:

https://www.amazon.com/Herbsmith-Organic-Milk-Thistle-Dogs/dp/B00541ABTU/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1544218412&sr=8-3&keywords=herbsmith+milk+thistle+for+dogs

Does anything, positive or negative, stand out to anyone for either of these?

Thanks!   :-* :-* :-*

I'm trying to figure out which one has the most "bang for my buck."  I like that the Herbsmith one has a lot more reviews, and their customer service responded to the 1 and 2 star reviews, but the other one is cheaper.  Both are made in the USA  thumbsup1 and are organic  thumbsup1.

I couldn't really figure out which would last longer based on the dosing (math was never my favorite subject).  And the vet now has Mom's dog on a prescription that contains milk thistle:  https://www.amazon.com/Rx-Vitamins-Pets-Hepato-Support-Capsules/dp/B003PR32TG

Decisions, decisions . . . .

Can you ask her vet?

Can you ask her vet?

The vet put her on this:

https://www.amazon.com/Rx-Vitamins-Pets-Hepato-Support-Capsules/dp/B003PR32TG

However, it's a "prescription" which means it probably costs a LOT more than what I was looking at, which contains the same main ingredient, and the products I posted about are also organic and made in the USA.  I don't know about the one the vet prescribed.

But my other concern was that my mother has arthritic hands, and she has to open these capsules and mix the powder into her dog's food.  Opening capsules with arthritic hands . . . IMO, makes it harder for her than it needs to be, even though she's using a knife to do it (which also makes me a little nervous).  I was looking at products that were just powder so all she had to do was scoop it out and mix into the food.

I did finally order the Herbsmith milk thistle, which will be direct-shipped to her.

On a bit of a side note . . . I do wish the vet hadn't given the dog a rabies booster, esp. since she wasn't due for another 7 months.  Her liver is already carrying a toxic load, which is why she's getting the milk thistle.  It makes no sense to me to add to that burden when it's not yet necessary, and before the milk thistle has had time to work.  But . . . what's done is done.   :(

I'll try.  We don't live together, so I can only provide "long distance" supervision.   :)
