With 6 cats, we reallllllly like to keep meal time as simple as possible. Simple prevents mistakes. :) Some of the furkids require Miralax from time to time. BUT with 6 cats, I don't always know who needs help. Someone can be pretttttty miserable for a while - while I figure it out.
Many say that Miralax is safe for temporary use and/or long term use. Many say it isn't. All I know is that I am not comfortable with it at all. I wanted to find something more natural that would work for everyone. Something that would help one that may need help, but do nothing negative to the ones that didn't need any help.
Food Fur Life EZ Egg Yolk is the answer! BanWooHoo
I bought the Food Fur Life EZ egg yolk powder. If anyone is going to have a problem with something new... it is Roxy. Roxy didn't hesitate to eat her meals that included the egg yolk, and everything stayed down. SCORE!
I've been giving it to all the cats (and dog) for several days now. I know there are a lot of benefits to giving egg yolk to furkids, but for my gang... the litter box "deposits" are ALL beautiful!
The downside... I can't keep the cats off the counter, when preparing their meals! They all LOVE the egg yolk!!!!!!

That's great news, Lola! I'm so glad it's working for all of them! multistars multistars multistars

Sad to report the beautiful poops must have been due to something else. Marble looking poos are back. Egg yolk IS good for them and they do all LOVE it... and I have two more packages of it.
I am beyond bummed.
I feed a variety of proteins from a variety of sources. Different protein and different source every day. What the heck...
-
What do you mean? Marble poops are perfectly normal with raw fed cats. When you feed a lot of different proteins, you get marble poop.
-
I thought she meant marble shaped instead of marble shaded?
-
Marble shaped.
-
Ohh. Darn! Yeah, marble shaped is not good. Let's see.
Too much calcium perhaps?
You're not using psyllium at all are you? That caused dreadful marble shaped poops in Mazy cat.
-
Too much calcium would be from bones... correct?
No, I don't give any psyllium.
They all get a probiotic.
No treats or snacks.
Right now, everyone is getting a little Miralax. Poop day is tomorrow. I'll keep you posted. :)
PS
They are small marble poops, if that makes a difference. Nothing like the whopper Roxy had a while back.

Yes, you many need to reevaluate your percentages. Many cats cannot handle the "standard" 10% bone, and need more like 7%. And many grinds are even higher than 10%.
Here's a handy calculator:

Ah, I found it. Here also is an article addressing this and what you can do.

I already use that calculator. :)
I thought 10% bone was a must. Hmmmmm
-
As far as I know, the only "must" in raw feeding percentages is at least 5% liver. There are no exceptions, whatever other organs are used, there must be at least 5% liver.
Calcium/bone can be adjusted depending on a cat's individual need, to some extent. Like the article says, you will need to know the percentages from the pre-ground source.
My own personal choice would be: increase egg yolk, for the ones who seem to need it, and/or maybe look into adding some slippery elm bark for mucilage. (both supplements add their own nutritional value to the diet as well)

All the grinds, I currently purchase, give that info. That is why I use the calculator... to make adjustments to the grinds that aren't 80/10/5/5.
Right now, the Miralax works. I'm frustrated, but I'll figure something out...

I didn't know that! That's good to know.

Also good to know. Like Lola, I also thought the 10% bone was a must. Thanks for the information, MC! HeadButt HeadButt
