WHY IT SUCKS TO BE A PET LIVING IN CANADA
« on: April 27, 2015, 07:19:11 PM »
Well so much for people thinking that Canadian dog food is better than US food.

WHY IT SUCKS TO BE A PET LIVING IN CANADA (of course regulations wise)

A Canuck meat company from British Columbia recently plead guilty to selling deadly contaminated meat for human consumption, and got fined $125K for it!

However, they also sold the majority of the load to pet food manufacturers, and guess what? No one in Canada cared that our pets ate it. No one stepped in to protect pets and pet parents even thought the CFIA was alerted about it!

HEADLINES -

“Pitt Meadows Meats is expected to plead guilty to at least one count of selling E. coli-tainted meat.” - CBC News

“A Pitt Meadows meat company (B.C.) pleaded guilty Monday in New Westminster Supreme Court to unlawfully selling tainted food and was fined $125,000.

Pitt Meadows Meats, entered the plea on a charge of unlawfully selling food unfit for human consumption. According to the CFIA, the plant destroyed some of the meat prior to the recall, while the majority was sold to PET FOOD MANUFACTURERS and only a “few kilograms” of the tainted meat were sold in stores for human consumption.” – The Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows News

In a small, teeny tiny blurb (and I mean small) it says this Canadian meat company sold the majority of the tainted, sickened meat to pet food manufacturers.

WHAT!?

“However at the same time of the CFIA investigation of the meat company, CFIA learned that the majority of the E.coli contaminated meat went to pet food. Did CFIA learn which pet food companies received the E.coli contaminated meat? No, that’s not their job. Did CFIA alert pet food consumers? No, that’s not their job. Did CFIA recall any pet food made with the E.coli contaminated meat? No, that’s not their job. Did the meat go into raw pet food or can pet food or kibble pet food in Canada? Who knows…CFIA’s does not investigate pet food. No one in Canada does.” – Susan Thixton

When pet food safety advocate, Susan of Truth About Pet Food, sent me this link, I was floored! Our nation is selling tainted meats to our pet food manufacturers? Unfortunately, it is impossible to find out which pet food manufacturers bought the meats or where it was sent.

When the Canadian Food Inspection Agency was contacted about the E. coli tainted meats being sold to pet food manufacturers, this was their response:

QUESTION :
It seems that most of the tainted meat from Pitt Meadows, who pleaded guilty last week, ended up in pet food. If that is the case, did the CFIA investigate? If so, what did the CFIA do to alert Canadian pet owners regarding this issue?

ANSWER:
The CFIA's mandate is to protect the livestock and people of Canada from diseases as listed in the Health of Animals Act and Regulations and the Reportable Diseases Regulations.

The CFIA does not regulate the manufacture of processed pet food containing animal products and by-products for sale in Canada, other than prohibiting the use of certain bovine tissues related to Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) in Canada.

If you have concerns related to the quality of a particular pet food manufactured in Canada, you should contact the manufacturing company, retailer or the Pet Food Association of Canada (PFAC), with respect to your concerns.

"The Canadian government receives an estimated $200 million dollars each year in sales tax revenue on pet food sales (Canada) alone. What are Canadian pet food consumers getting for their $200 million revenue provided to government? E.coli contaminated meat pet food.

Here in the U.S. pet food consumers don’t have much support from FDA, but something from FDA, no matter how little, certainly beats the nothing Canadian pet food consumers have.

Every Canadian pet food consumer needs to send your government representatives a message and CFIA a message. They need to receive millions of phone calls and emails. This is a dangerous situation that needs to be resolved.” " – Truth About Pet Foods

Moral of the story: we pay taxes on our pet foods in Canada, but unfortunately we do not get any services for it. So as far as who is checking to see what goes into your pet’s dish, the answer is no one really, aside from the manufacturer. And seeing he doesn’t have to report it to anyone, well you’re left at his mercy.

Remember, not every pet food manufacturer is shady; there are good people out there in this world trying to help. But if our government doesn’t step in to help regulate and inspect what is going into our pet’s bodies:

In the end, our pets suffer.
