Title: Under the Dome - Stephen King
Post by: Middle Child on March 17, 2017, 09:12:41 PM
One of the tellers at the bank I go to during my work every day and I have struck up a nice acquaintance discussing books and videos.  We like a lot of the same books, or same types of books. One time when I told her that The Stand was one of my favorite books she suggested I read Under the Dome.  I stopped reading Stephen King after The Shining, except I re-read The Stand every few years, as I think it is a really incredible book.

I lost my taste for SK after The Shining, I think I started "Thinner" and found it gross and "Misery" was just awful. So I just stopped.

So anyway I got Dome from the library and became engrossed very quickly, because, let's face is SK is an incredible writer.  he just grabs you right away.  I couldn't put it down for an entire weekend and was almost half way through it, and then it just go to be too much.  It just kept getting more and more awful and more and more violent, with no relief.  By the time I was halfway through this 1074 page book (I stopped at page 515!) I decided to take a break.  Well the break has stretched out for a very long time and I finally have realized I just can't bring myself to go back to it.

So today I googled "Under the Dome ending" and read the synopsis in Wikpedia.  I'm glad I did.  Judging by that, it continues to just get worse and worse, and the ending turns out to be a big flat dud.  I realize the point, or at least part of the point is a story about human behavior under such unusual circumstances, but I just couldn't get through it.

And reading about the ending brought to mind "Strangers" by Dean Koontz. Strangers is a really good book, gripping, but the end is stupid, and it sounds like the ending of Dome is similar.

Anyone else ever read it?

Or Strangers, either?

No, sorry.  I am pretty much a non-fiction reader only.

Yeah I know. And I read fiction only, with a few, very few, exceptions.  :)
