I never believed they were private, but here's proof.

You might assume that chats sent on Facebook Messenger are completely private. But you'd be wrong.

Facebook confirmed Thursday that it uses automated tools to scan Messenger chats for malware links and child porn images. It also allows users to report chats that may violate community standards.

The company's moderators can review any messages that are flagged by users or the automated systems.

I haven't trusted anything about them since reading this quote years ago:

Quote
In 2010, Silicon Valley Insider published now-infamous instant messages from a 19-year-old Zuckerberg to a friend shortly after starting The Facebook in 2004. “yea so if you ever need info about anyone at harvard . . . just ask . . . i have over 4000 emails, pictures, addresses, sns” Zuckerberg wrote to a friend. “what!? how’d you manage that one?” they asked. “people just submitted it . .  i don’t know why . . . they “trust me” . . . dumb  &%$#'s” Zuckerberg explained.

Found it again in a new techcrunch story to make sure I got the quote right: https://techcrunch.com/2018/04/05/zuckerberg-deleted-messages/
