L-lysine
« on: December 10, 2013, 12:35:10 PM »
I know it has been discussed, several times, all over this forum, but... What is the recommended dose for a cat?

Just got back from taking Arrows and Lola to the vet.  They have a URI.  How did they get it... someone brought something back from a vet visit?  cat enclosure?   :-\

Hoping to stop it from going through the entire house, by giving the L-lysine to the others.  Can't remember the dosage amount.

Lola,
This what I give to Kally Kat from her first Vet Dr. Rogers who now works at a
Integrated Whole health Holistic clinic.

Dr. R is which is 5 towns away from where we live.
Much too far to get too & very high priced for that type of holistic health care for pets!

She says its kitty herpes just like teenagers get.
Lysine is very benefiting for Cats with URI illness!

Kally must have come in contact from either at the MetroWest Humane Society for the 2 weeks she was put in the shelter as her pet owners were quite elderly & couldn't keep her anymore!  :(
I buy this online at the link I gave you, as it's too expensive at the Vet I take her too!

They are moist & yummy, she loves them & I give her 2 at nite time & I cut them up a bit as she has FORL Feline Resorptive Oral Lesion tooth loss.
Another whole ballgame for that one!

The charge is $12.99 Vet's is about $42.00 yikes!!!! :o

They email me for promo codes for like 20% off & plus it's only $49.99 for S&H,
All in all, it's still much more cost effective for $12.99 plus $4.95 = $18.00 sounds betta than, $42.00 from the Vet!

Unless you have a large order it would be free over $80.00..
This wouldn't be good for me as I only have 1 pet per household where I live
Per lease agreement!

1st link,  http://www.entirelypets.com/vetri-lysine-plus.html

Then, I started giving her Lysine in its powder from in her 2nd wet meal of the day. She doesn't smell it as it's very palatable.

2nd linkhttp://ep.yimg.com/ay/entirelypets/l-lysine-for-cats-vetoquinol-viralys-powder-100-grams-viralys-4.jpg

It comes with a cute adorable litta blue scooper where I stir it in her already heated wet food.
She gets a scoop for her remaining amount of 500 mg between the soft chews at night & the powder form.
It has been very good for her overall health!

I hope this has been helpful for you as well other pet pawrents too!

Giving all our love & best of health as Pawsible!  cat4

I give Pookie 500 mg daily, 1/2 capsule in one breakfast, the other half capsule in one of his dinners.  I get mine from the health food store, usually the Twinlab, but my store didn't have it this time so now I'm using the Solgar (which are REALLY hard to open).

Therapeutic dose for cats is 500 mg a day.  I use the pure powder, 1/4 teaspoon of pure powder = 500 mg.

For myself I take twice that amount (I take it for a few weeks if I am feeling rundown or been exposed to someone with a cold or something)

I already had the powder form on hand, so that is what I'm giving.  I wrote the dose, on the lid of the bottle, so I won't have to ask again.

Kally, why do you give the chews and the powder form?

Good evening Lola & furriends,

Well, I first started out with the Chews, they are soft, smells so good & so yummy to Kally Kat & her Vet said to try using them at night as a treat!

Then, I saw l Lysine in its powder form, from there I give her a scoop in her first morning wet meal.
all in all she gets her 500 mg per day.

I could give her the 4 soft chews a day, but then it costs too much for me & the powder form last a very long time more cost $$$$ savings!

Lola, did you go to the 2 links I gave you at http://www.entirelypets.com/

I just lit another Candle for you Lola.

I was STUNNED to read this on ConsciousCat of all places.  From personal experience, with more then one cat, I TOTALLY disagree!  Reading the comments... I'm not alone either!

I didn't look at the link yet, but that's the latest news going around that l-lysine doesn't help herpes and never has. I see it posted all the time in the IBD group.  I do not agree and always say so.

 L-lysine saved Tolly's eyes.

Lactoferrin is the go-to for herpes these days, OR a combination of lactoferrin and l-lysine.

It is my opinion that just like everything else it's been misused (for instance all those stupid treats) and become less effective because the viruses are building a resistance.

As for URI, it's not an antibiotic, so no of course it would cure an URI.  It might help the body stay strong while it's being cured with antibiotics though.

At the time of my original post, a VERY dramatic event had occurred in our household.  All of a sudden many of the cats had upper respiratory infections.  IMO ... a misdiagnosis.  Only Arrows (maybe Lola...I would have to check my records) were given antibiotics.  The rest were given L-lysine only, and the symptoms subsided.  <---- The reason I came to the conclusion of a misdiagnosis.

I remember that. Not a fan of Ingrid, by the way. I keep going back and forth about mentioning it.  One side: who cares what my opinion is about The Conscious Cat? other: Well,if my opinion is at all valuable maybe it matters because....because...in my opinion is she does give misinformation sometimes, which can be dangerous.

I have recommended L-lysine to many that have mentioned their cats have "colds."  I have NEVER had one come back and say it didn't work. NONE.
If the cat is a shelter cat... it is almost a given they have issues.  In my experience.

Your opinion IS very valuable.  You have extensive experience with cats from various backgrounds, and/or who have had various illnesses, and you have a lot to share.  That information will be very helpful to others, but only if you "pass on what you have learned."   :D
