Actual wolves in the wild are probably the ultimate example. No one is running around after them with clippers.
Like I've told many before, you trim because you think they'll shed less? No. They're still going to shed the same number of hairs, they're just shorter and look like less in the pile you gather. Much easier to see longer hairs than short hairs as well since the shorter hairs can embed themselves into carpeting and leave less for a vacuum's beater bar to grab hold of--unlike longer hair.
