Title: Jennie Jennie 4/2006- 1/28/19
Post by: Middle Child on February 01, 2019, 04:57:43 AM
I don't know her exact birth date. April 2006 was a guess based on vet estimate of age at rescue.  I've just realized with a shock that she wasn't even 13. I thought she was almost 14, but I was doing the math wrong.

I woke up with Jennie sleeping at my back this morning.  Except she wasn't there when I reached for her. But there's comfort in those visits. I hope she comes again soon. I miss her so much. I just miss her so much.

One of my greatest comforts was how much Jennie enjoyed her raw diet. She lived to eat, Jennie LIVED to EAT,  and eating big raw chunks of meat and wings gave her such enormous pleasure satisfaction. I remember when I started her on wings it would take her a good five minutes to eat one.  It didn't take her long though to learn the skills, and soon they were only taking a minute or two.  funny2

I've tried a number of times overr the years to get footage of Jennie's Supper Song and Dance.  I have a vague memory of getting some shots, but it will take me a while to sort through unlabeled videos to find them.

Lots and LOTS of hugs!!!
At first, the subject line made me sad.  After watching the first video... all smiles.  Such joy to watch her!
Happy memories will eventually become the norm... as I am sure you already know.

Thanks everyone.

Right now the memories are lingering over the weekend just passed.  The entire weekend was spent doing all Jennie's favorite things.  It wasn't planned ahead that way but it's the way things went, and of course now I know why.

I'll be coming in to share my favorite Jennie memories, other than what is posted in her Gotcha Day thread.

One of my favorites is Jennie learning to wear a harness for yard time. Jennie came in the fall, and as a rescued stray, had no interest at all in coming outside with the rest of us (It was Ootay, Tolly and Mazy cat then). She would sit in the window and watch us out in the yard but made no move to ask to join us.

Over the winter I helped her get used to the idea of a harness by draping hers over her while she was lying around, so it became hers.  After awhile I started putting it on her, and watch her flop to the floor, then take it off.

Finally spring came and everyone lined up for their harnesses on our first day out. I put Jennie's on her too, and she flopped to the floor, as the rest of the cats paraded out.

After a while Jennie ventured out, in harness, dragging her string, with her back so low slung you'd think she was carrying a 50 pound weight.  She walked like that for a few days, but then began getting used to it and would forget and scamper around the yard, freely...until she saw me looking at her.

If she caught my glance, instantly her back would sag with the 50 pound weight again.  It was freaking hilarious!

Finally she forgot all about it and it became just part of being outside, but it took awhile.

It was that instant slump as soon as she saw me looking at her that has me smiling and giggling as I write this.

I miss her so much, I just miss her so much.

I hope she sleeps with me again tonight. Or I wouldn't mind seeing her in dreams either.

After Tolly left I had this dream about Tolly and at least 30 other red cats milling around.  They were all in my childhood bedroom.  I think Tolly was showing me what a fun time he was having meeting al the other red cats in heaven. I do love a ginger cat!

Any Jennie visits last night?

Her precious little face did come to me when I woke this morning but I didn't feel her sleeping there. I guess she must be very busy in heaven reuniting with Tolly and Ootay and meeting Bibbs (who sent her to us) and Squeaky and Baby and Sissy.

Queen Eva is still very unsettled and still looking for Jennie.  Mazy cat SEEMS to be herself but she is a deep cat and I am watching her carefully.

I removed Jennie's Meal Spot table Thursday night. Litter boxes have to be dumped and replaced this weekend. Jennie's special bedding* has all been bundled up to be washed and put away, but no other changes will be made.

*Special bedding is the towels and squares of old sheet I cut up and sewed together to cover my bed and certain other spots Jennie liked to use, that would be difficult to clean.

Jennie story:

It took a long time for Jennie to let me know what her Game was. Considering her early home life before she was abandoned was most likely not very nice (based on her early behavior here) I suspect no one ever played with her much.  Her favorite group Game was to bust up a Game when I was on the floor playing with the others.

She would sit and watch us play, and -master of timing- just at the right moment, burst around the corner and crash right through us.  It was hilarious.  And, not so oddly enough, a very similar Game to one Bibbs (Angel) used to play. Since Bibbs sent us Jennie it's not surprising they had similar qualities, which I am leading to...Jennie's own personal Game turned out to be...being patted with a fly swatter, on the bed.  The fly swatter patting was ALSO Bibbs's favorite thing!

So Jennie finally somehow got me to understand that she liked to have a fly swatter session on the bed (aerating the cat I called it haha!) and then she had a String, just this one special boot lace, that she liked to chase around the bed.

She liked me to pile up the down comforter in winter and drag the string along the top so she could pounce on it and sink into the comforter.  In summer she liked to skid across the top of the sheets while chasing it.

That was Jennie's interactive Game.  I've tried over the years to get video of it and I may have some earlier ones, but the only one I have to share right now is the one I took the very last time she played this Game, Sunday January 27.  She was no longer chasing her String (boot lace) by then, but still enjoying being aerated. Of course I sing her song to her during these sessions as well. She used to sing back.

Jennie had some...heart stopping...ways of entertaining herself.  I don't know how often she did this, I only saw her do it the one time I managed to catch it on camera (before I had a camera with video) but I am sure she kept it up for many years.  In fact it was only a few months ago I saw her over there on that heater, and I was afraid she was going to try to leap and I encouraged her to come down. I dind't know if she could still make it and the drop to the stairs is long.

Well boo hoo.  The leap/landing picture did not come through.  I downloaded these from photobucket last night because they are threatening to delete my pictures if I don't pay, or reduce my content. So I downloaded this series, then deleted the folder.  But for some reason that one picture didn't come through.  You still get the idea, but it's the leap that is the most heart stopping.

Without the leap/landing photo I suppose that sequence is difficult to understand. The heater she is on is suspended on the wall over the stairs.  The stairs are encompassed by a half-wall.  Jennie used to walk along the heater then leap into empty space up and across and land on the end of the wall that wraps around.

Well I never saw any cat do THAT.  funny2 Jennie would have benefited from those houses you see on the internet, devoted to cats with shelves on the walls and such.  I haven't got any walls to put shelves on, but I don't feel she suffered for it, clearly she made her own fun. love1

I like sharing Jennie's unique character here with videos and stories and pictures, but it's a very lonely feeling to post things like this and not see any response. I appreciate your post.  Hug1

Most cats make their world their place. She enjoyed the high ground.

She did. She never got up on any furniture at all when she first came here. I think she wasn't treated well and was possibly not allowed on furniture.  I was thrilled when she started getting up high, and not flinching away when I noticed.

I saw the first time she got on the playhouse..and the look on her face when she saw the new perspective.  I will never forget it.

In Jennie's case I suspect it was abuse that kept her off the furniture. I am certain she was hit.

The Playhouse is something I built for them after Tolly came.  It was Bibbs, Ootay and Tolly then, so it is close to 20 years old.

Here is Queen Eva modeling it tonight.  (The sisal post in front of it is not part of the Playhouse) And an old picture with Tolly demonstrating the little window between the two rooms.

The cave at the bottom runs the length, it was Ootay's place and no one has used it since Ootay left us.  Jennie liked to use the open room as a by-way from one side of the living room to the other. Queen Eva goes that way too, when playing Games.

The other partially enclosed room isn't used by anyone any more either.  Tolly used to sleep there a lot.

In case you were wondering that is a very old peacock feather in my hand in the first picture.

Someone dragged it out from somewhere, and it's been the Game of the Night for the last 3 nights.

Queen Eva likes to chase the feather end, Mazy cat likes to chase the other, non feather, end.

 funny2

Jennie never had any interest in peacock feathers

funny2 Well they don't hold up all that long anyway, but we haven't played peacock feathers in years, so this one really is ancient. I didn't even realize there were any left and I have no idea where this one was dragged out from, or who did the dragging.

They do love the Playhouse.  Bibbs and Ootay and Tolly knew when I started building it, that it was for them.  I do have some non-digital pictures of the process.  If anyone is interested I can dig them out this weekend and take shots of them and post them.  I used 2x2s, and 1/4 inch plywood, and remnants ($2 each, back then) from a carpet store.

The 2x4 you see on the front in the Tolly picture was for Bibbs, as she was a wood scratcher, but she never used it. Not the right kind of wood I guess, ha.  Tolly liked to rub his face against the top edges of it and rest his chin on it but eventually I bumped into it too many times and took it off.

PS. Tolly spent a lot of time on top of the Playhouse.  He was Top Cat.  When he left us, Jennie decided that Spot was a Top Cat Spot and took it over immediately, defending it from all others.  Eventually as years passed, she relaxed about it, and it once again became a spot any cat could use, but those first few years after she became Top Cat, it was Hers and Hers alone.

I found this on photobucket...It was in a folder on it's own with the title Jennie Top Cat 12-6-11.  Tolly left us 11/29/11

I found many more, most undated, but lots I would like to share here. Pictures before 2009 will be more complicated, because I didn't go digital until then.

Two cherished shots

The first one is really old because I haven't had those glasses in 10 years. Taken with my first lap top,  which I got in 2008, I was so excited about having a web cam and cable internet

The second is dated 3-7-13 That was during my hair grow out year, you can see a bit of my ponytail on my neck :)

Both downloaded from old photobucket folders

Thanks for looking all! Dreamed about Jennie last night, well not about her, but she was in the dream. It wasn't a nice dream, it was one of those icky dreams where the cats get out and I'm freaking out about how they got out and how to get them back.  It was Mazy cat and Jennie.

It wasn't until I woke up, got up to use the bathroom, and came back to bed that I realized Jennie was in the dream, but not here.

I've been asking her to come, but not like that!

So many reminders today.  One month ago Jennie had her last day, and it was a wonderful day for her, and all of us. But being a creature of habit, many of the things I am doing today are the exact same as one month ago.  Grinding Mazy cat's meat.  Making a pot of bone broth stock for myself (including the hot chicken sandwich and sharing of chicken).  Nail trims for everyone.

I still long for visits from Jennie. Last night I think we had a very brief one, the first "physical" one that I know of (aside from when I woke up and felt her sleeping at my shoulder on the 3rd day). I was getting settled into bed and Mazy cat came and jumped up too, but just as she was jumping up for a second I saw JENNIE, instead of Mazy cat.  Almost as if Jennie's form was superimposed over Mazy cat's.  It was so quick but I saw it, felt it and it took my breath for a second, before I recovered enough to say HI Jennie! But by then she was gone.

Early this morning I had a brief dream.  I think I was not quite asleep but I thought I was in the kitchen and she was on the floor singing for a sliver of meat and I handed it to her.  Then I woke up fully and said Jennie I am glad you are coming to me in dreams but again, not really the kind of thing I want to see.  I don't want to think of her asking for food.  It makes me think of her being hungry.

Lola, you may be right about her being a bit of a joker with these anxiety producing little dream visits.

I have been trawling through my photobucket accounts and finding many forgotten photos, including some not forgotten but I thought I had lost.

Including a copy of the missing shot in her dare devil heater-to-half-wall leap sequence, the landing photo.  Here it is

Now can you mentally fit it in place or should I post the whole sequence again?

That would be great! Thank you!  It belongs in reply #11 between the third and last picture.  Then the sequence is complete.  You  can see how she looks all around deciding where to leap..and then..off she goes!

Here are two I did not know I still had.  I thought they were lost in the computer crash of July 2013 but I found them in a photobucket file.  The story is in her Gotcha Day which I have just lifted from there : http://parenting-furkids.com/index.php?topic=3083.0

The first time Jennie ever showed any indication of wanting to play:  I was on the floor with Tolly and Mazy cat (Ootay was sleeping).  We were playing Catch the Crumpled Paper Ball.  There were a number of paper balls around and Mazy cat and Tolly were waiting for me to toss another when Jennie came tearing out of the bedroom and busted right through the middle of our Game.  She snagged a paper ball and dribbled it into a corner where she somersaulted over ti and kicked it to pieces.  We all just sat and stared, it happened so fast , but it didn't take long to discover that that was Jennie's fun thing, she loved to ambush a Game and bust it apart.

The pictures are blurry and poor, and don't really show the story but I am so happy to have them anyway.

Yup, definitely lived to eat.  Some of those images made me think of some of the old Snoopy cartoons, where he's perched in a tree pretending to be a bird of prey.  She had some serious balancing skills!

I also loved how she ignored you while enjoying your soup.   funny2

Thanks for looking!I'm so glad I have all these!  That chunk of chicken was so funny! She had stole it off the plate, it was so hot I don't know how she held on to it. I snatched her and the camera at the same time.

I had other pictures of her swiping food but they were lost when my computer crashed in 2013.  One of the most memorable was when she stole a kielbasa link off my plate. I used to eat them like a hot dog, you know, on a piece of bread with some cheese melted and a pickle , maybe a little mustard.  I had just got up for a second and when I turned around the bread was empty.  It was just so funny!  I found her behind the washing machine trying to eat the thing with frantic haste.

It wasn't until I began raw feeding that she was no longer so frantic about food.  She still would try to steal it if opportunity presented itself,but...it wasn't frantic. Most of the time she would just wait until I was finished.

I found these pics of how I used to let Jennie lick out all the dishes and containers, because it helped her to feel more satisfied, the more dishes she could have.

Every time I have an attack of missing Jennie, my gosh the pain takes my breath away, I have to come here and post more pictures to remind myself of the joy she brought, to balance such awful hurt.  Jennie had this way of lying with her front paws stretched straight out.  I always thought of it as her ultimate contentedness position. I saw it, the first time she got on the bed and stayed there, and took hundreds of pictures of her in that position. (She's on me, in this first picture)

Some days I just miss Jennie so much. The other morning she and Tolly came to me while I was in the shower...just their little faces pressed together, in my mind.  I guess those two visits (when I woke to feeling her curled against my shoulder, and the time I saw her superimposed over Mazy cat at bed time) and the two dreams are all I'm going to get as far as "real" visits" but I am grateful for the mind visits as well.

I posted this picture of Jennie in another forum in a thread about "funny markings cats have".  All her life I have tried to describe to myself her markings on her front there but never could reach a satisfactory description.  Someone in the thread said "She looks like she's wearing a sweater with just the one button buttoned" and I finally knew! I was so happy to have that insight I got all teary eyed and grateful.

here's another I've always loved. Well one of hundreds.  I was always taking pics of her sitting there under our Guardian Angel with the pictures of the other Angel cats, with the sun giving her a glowing silhouette and her tail wrapped over her white toes.

Jennie loved this Pedestal Spot on the porch.

The pedestal is from my childhood home.  It's almost completely destroyed now from exposure to the elements, but it is from the Catholic Church, probably held a statue at some point.  We lived in the former convent next to the church, and the attic was full of old relics. Sometimes I regret putting it outside, I kept it in pristine condition for many years, but oh well.

There is another picture I am thinking of, but I can't find it. It may be saved on the external hard drive.
Some days I miss her so much it takes my breath away. I just can't believe she isn't here.

Jennie's been here, twice. Late last night as I was getting ready for bed, I thought I caught a glimpse of her in a bed that had been set on the Playhouse. The bed doesn't usually live there, but I was sure I saw her curled up in it, just for a second. and today.

I got up from this desk and walked past Mazy cat in the Crow's Nest and gave her a stroke and then I walked past Jennie on the Playhouse and gave her a stroke. Then I stopped (what?) and turned back.  When I looked back of course she wasn't there any more, but she WAS there. I saw her. Felt her even.

A million times I've walked past Jennie at that Spot and given her a stroke.

This was the spot:

I was looking for something else here earlier and found a post where I made reference to a few of Tolly's visits.  I had only remembered the really clear ones, but in that old post I mentioned seeding a flash of white paws running past me a few times.

Jennie loved to stare at herself in the mirror. She could often be seen here, especially right after a meal. One year at Christmas I had a  Santa toque  perched on top of the mirror and caught a picture of Jennie in this pose, looking like Santa Claus.  Sadly I lost that picture in the computer crash of July 2013.

Thanks Pookie!  Isn't she funny?  She just loved that mirror spot.  I have pictures of Tolly and Ootay peeking in it too, but they were never dedicated like Jennie was.  By the way: I do plan to address Jennie's "hair day" pictures in this thread, just haven't gotten to it yet.

This is how I saw her with that brief glimpse last night, except, like I said, that bed was (still is) on the top of the Playhouse, at the back near the wall, with Jennie curled up in it. If she likes it there I'll leave it. love1

Here's something interesting.  I left that bed where I saw Jennie in it, on the Playhouse.  I haven't seen her there again, but last night this happened......

Mazy cat doesn't get on the Playhouse much except to use it as a through-way.  She also hardly ever has used this bed. And now that I am looking at the pictures this morning (I took 10 from all angles!) the way she's got herself squished to the side makes me wonder if Someone Else was there with her.

I just noticed I never said that that was last night I took those pictures.  I was in the bedroom doing Queen Eva's nightly Bed Games requirements. I think Mazy got into that bed because Jennie was there, even though I didn't "see" her.

Very possible!

I have been looking at those pictures again.  The more I look the more I am convinced. Mazy cat's posture...she's holding herself so carefully, as if she doesn't want to disturb her bed-mate.  I've seen her do that back in the days when she was trying to entice Tolly to sleep with her, after Ootay left us. She also looks like that on the rare occasions she tries to curl up next to Queen Eva.

That bed lives there on the Playhouse now. love1

Sometimes I think that I can't bear to go through this again, and yet, I do have to go through it again, twice more.

Today for some reason, well just now, I looked for Jennie here and here.  Maybe it's the angle of the sun..I expected to see her in either of these spots, today, catching the sun.  And my heart broke all over again.

The first one, I see, was taken on 3/19/17.  the other, just a little earlier in the month (and an earlier year) 3/6/16

I miss her so much.  I just miss her so much.

Here Mazy cat can be seen once again sharing space with Jennie Angel in Jennie's bed.  A little while later she took over the whole bed, so Jennie must have left. She stayed in it until bed time meal at 9:00 pm. (I just noticed the window in the first pic...we still have snow)

Edit:  I also notice, now that I am looking at them, that when she did take over the whole bed, her body moved into the other side, where Jennie "was".

Mazy cat is using the bed still usually full on in the middle or even curling up on the side that was where Jennie was before. I am still getting glimpses of Jennie but not is such a...concrete way. I hadn't felt her in a while and was thinking she'd decided we were okay now and didn't need her any longer, and then right after I started thinking that I started feeling her in a different way.  I don't know quite how to describe it.  But I'm going to try.

Before Jennie came here, I kept getting little glimpses out of the corner of my eye of something...  You know how you do, you think you see or feel something turn to look and nothing is there.  That went on for a number of weeks and after a while I began to get a sense that it was cat related and started saying things like "whenever you are ready". When I bought new harnesses, I bought an extra, not consciously thinking about a new cat, just thinking it was good to have an extra.

Then Jennie turned up.

Well it's those little glimpses I am getting again.  I keep seeing a little glimpse of her tail disappearing around the corner, for instance. That's how she did when she was coming, so maybe she is getting ready to go off to new adventures.  I don't want her to I want her to stay with me (like Tolly and Ootay have done), but it's not about what I want, after all.

Thanks Pookie. Yesterday was one of those days when missing her suddenly just overwhelmed me and took my breath away. Oh my Jennie I miss her so much!

Jennie's most prominent feature was her omnipresent Hackle.  I do think it stemmed from her days of raising a family on her own, always feeling on the defensive.  She lost most of those behaviors but always had her Hackle. In face Queen Eva learned to put up a Hackle from Jennie.

I took hundreds of pictures of Jennie's Hackle over the years, at least I thought I did. I can't seem to find many now.

These are all old, found on my old photobucket account before a couple of computer crashes  Also, just for fun here is baby Queen Eva, practicing her Hackle

^^^   More on this!  I found this video, also of Queen Eva when she was just tiny...not even 5 months old..practicing her Hackle.  Watch the line of her back closely, it's faint with the camera I am using, you can see it come up especially when the crow speaks. I only include it here because like I said above, she learned this from Jennie.  She obviously learned A LOT from Jennie over the years, judging by how she has taken all of it over.

I have just found a whole bunch of early days pics of Jennie, saved in a walmart photo file Just a sample....

Jennie and the way she used to creep in her harness before she got used to it.  Like a 50 pound weight on her back.  After a while she forgot about it except when she realized I was watching her, then she'd drop to the ground again. Eventually of course she became a pro.

And two pics of her when she first came forever home

Jennie had a real trash mouth. Swore like a sailor and the other cats were quite shocked over her language at first. After awhile we all got used to it, and in fact, one day when she was giving Tolly a real dressing down as Tolly sat and started in amazement...Jennie yawned.  I fell on the floor laughing, and they never took her profanity and noise seriously after that.

In fact Tolly and Mazy cat took great delight in teasing Jennie to make her swear. I was thrilled to discover I had caught this in action..with my old floppy disc digital camera!

Tolly would come up behind Jennie and swat at her back legs.  Jennie would whip around and swearing like crazy chase after him and he would run away kicking up his heels, I swear he was saying "haha made you say it!"

Mazy cat liked the face on approach as you will see here.  I am so happy to find these.  Both were in a folder dated 2008.

Jennie had this delightful habit of catching the late evening sunbeams. She didn't like to be in direct sunlight when it was too hot, so the late evening slant was perfect, when she could find it. I took a number of pictures of her doing this over the years.

I love this set where she was really going out of her way to follow the sun

Thanks for looking!  HeadButt

Jennie doesn't come around much "in person" any more but visits in my mind more.

She did appear in a dream I had last week, which hung on for days after. I do wonder if she was telling me I don't need to worry about Mazy cat just yet. The dream was all weird stuff as dreams are..the pertinent part is: once again the cats were outside and I was freaking about about it. It wasn't at my house either and they were on a roof outside a window.  It was Mazy cat and Jennie out there.  The screen in the window was broken and I didn't know how, once I got Mazy cat back in the house, I was going to keep her safe because I had to go to a funeral.  I went out there and Jennie was no longer there and Mazy cat walked back into the house and was curled up sound asleep on a chair. I still don't know what house that was.

Yesterday after an adventurous outing with a friend, I came home and was so exhausted, after I fed the girls I went in the bedroom and took a nap.  As I settled onto the down comforter (didn't bother to unmake the bed) they both joined me, Mazy cat on her own bed next to my head, Queen Eva curled up at my back and as I drifted off to sleep I felt Jennie curl up in my arms.

Earlier..I think it was last Sunday..the first nice, really nice, warm sunny day out on the porch, we spent the whole day out there, and I saw Jennie stretched out in her favorite spot.

Exactly like this, but not looking at me.

This morning I was remembering one of Jennie's funny habits.  I actually got video of this sequence a few times but before I could edit and upload them somewhere like youtube that computer crashed.  Somehow I never got around to catching it again. :(

So I'll put it here for all posterity.

Game time, with three, had a routine.  Queen Eva, being the most energetic and pushy about  being first, had her first Game. Queen Eva had a Game at the end, too.  Queen Eva's Game usually segued right into Mazy cat's Game, because often Mazy cat would start barging in a bit on Queen Eva near the end.  In the meantime Jennie, even though she knew her time would come, would sit on the roof of the Playhouse and holler, to remind me she hadn't had a turn yet.  It was so funny!

Jennie's turn of course was the flyswatter on the bed, and the chasing her String all across the bed.

But it was so funny, that hollering.  Sometimes, as Mazy cat was winding up her turn and Queen Eva was getting a few more minutes, Jennie would pretend to have given up, and would go sit in her Supper Spot. "If she won't play with me maybe I can get her to feed me!"

But it was all an act.  I am sure she positioned herself over there, on the other side of the apartment, to have the joy of tearing from the far side of the kitchen into the bedroom for her Game when I called her. She had a favorite little route she liked to take involving climbing a post and jumping into and hurtling herself through the through-way in the Playhouse to get to the bed.

Oddest thing happened on Sunday.  I was just relaxing on the porch with the girls, reading my book.  I stopped to gaze at my hill of trees and watch the breeze and suddenly Jennie was there, in my head.

That isn't so unusual,  I was happy to see her and said so, and then Tolly was there too. Tolly comes frequently so that wasn't really odd either. Then Ootay came, and I thought well, since  they were both there to take her when she left, I wasn't surprised to see her either.

But as I sat still, still staring at my hill of trees, one by one, each cat I've had the honor of spending my life with came in, one after another in the order they left me, all of this was happening in my head.  I wasn't picturing them in my head they were IN my head.

If I closed my eyes I didn't see them, so I kept my eyes opened.  Jennie, Tolly, Ootay, then Bibbs was there, then Baby, Sissy and finally right at the back Squeaky poked his head up (I've NEVER had him visit before). I was fascinated, and they stayed there for a while before fading away.

Later I experimented to see if I made it up and tried to reenact it. I could summon the memory of it happening, but could not replicate the experience, so I know it was true.

It was a wonderful gift and I am still hugging the memory to me.
