Animal Massage
« on: May 22, 2015, 10:36:32 PM »
I was driving home from an appointment the other day, and while stopped at a traffic light I happened to look over at the van next to me.  It was a commercial van for a Canine and Equine Massage service.  Okay, I know I can be oblivious, but I had never heard of that before and thought that was really cool!  It makes sense that if massage helps relax tight muscles, improve circulation and ease pain in humans, that it could also work in animals.  And there are actually people trained in it!  Who knew?  (Okay, I didn't).

It seems like those therapists are usually for dogs and/or horses, but there are small animals massage therapists out there that work on cats, too.  Here are two organizations that can help you find one in your area:

I massage Vlad & Barkly all the time. They love it. I started doing it with Dannyboy & Sharkly. It is a good way to keep an eye out for any odd lumps and bumps.

If someone else wants to try it on their own dogs, this is the book I have:  http://www.amazon.com/Healing-Touch-Dogs-Massage-Program/dp/1557045763/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1432353351&sr=8-1&keywords=dog+massage

I don't know of any books to recommend about other animals though.
"In order to really enjoy a dog, one doesn't merely try to train him to be semihuman. The point of it is to open oneself to the possibility of becoming partly a dog." Edward Hoagland
"Thorns may hurt you, men desert you, sunlight turn to fog; but you're never friendless ever, if you have a dog."

Fish loves a good massage. I read somewhere that it is good for cats to get one.
