L-Glutamine for IBD
« on: April 26, 2017, 08:25:16 PM »
Interesting read from holisticat.com:

http://holisticat.com/en/chronic-diseases/39-ibd.html

I was wondering if this would help Mazy Cat:

Quote
L-Glutamine (Source Naturals brand powder): an amino acid shown to help slow down catabolism (break down of musle) and repair the abdominal wall and mucous lining -- 1/16 tsp

Quote
Many cats with IBD only need L-Glutamine short-term, and long-term maintain with a raw diet alone or with Primal Defense added plus whatever fiber source they can tolerate. Please do thorough research for contraindications (related to liver and kidney disease) before giving L-Glutamine for any extended period of time especially if you have a teenage or older kitty.

Just something to keep in mind.   HeadButt

Here's another one:

http://felinenutrition.net/supplements/

Quote
L-glutamine helps reduce intestinal inflammation. Pull apart a capsule and add the tasteless powder to your food recipe or mix directly on top of food each day. Give 100 mg/day (for example a 500mg capsule would last your cat 5 days) for an average sized cat. It is best to build up to the full dose slowly and not to give the supplement for more than 2-3 months.

http://viim.org/dog-cat-diarrhea-chronic.php (this article mentions some other supplements that help heal the intestinal lining, like N-acetyl-glucosamine:

Quote
L-Glutamine: an amino acid that serves as fuel for cells lining the intestinal tract and helps support normal intestinal functioning. Recommended for both canines and felines with diarrhea and chronic inflammatory bowel disorders.

Thanks Pookie.  I know about l-glutamine, as it is often recommended in the IBD group. Mazy cat gets l-glutamine from her bone broth. :)

Wonder what the issue would be with liver and kidneys, supplementing it.

I was wondering if adding the actual supplement to her meals (besides the bone broth meals) for a little while would help, too.  But I was also posting this info for our other members.   :)
