Sterilite storage boxes for use as litter pans
« on: November 02, 2019, 07:59:36 PM »
The ones I buy for use as litter boxes... discontinued.   :'( They have a new version of the same size.  HOWEVER the new version has an uneven bottom.  When litter runs low, the "deposits" stick in the lower area. Ugh!

Just a heads up.

Well RATS!  I was thinking about getting something like that for Miss Kitty.  She uses the box she has, but I wonder if she'd like a bigger box.  She tends to pee in the corner . . .

Thanks for the update!

There are several sizes, with taller sides.  They may not all have the uneven bottoms.  I didn't check them.  I preferred the ones that had short sides.

This is a jumbo litter pan. I have a few of these.  They are very comparable to the Sterilite boxes that I use(d).  They always send me the blue color.  I don't like blue.   Silly7

Get a concrete mixing tub. Chic black, even bottom and low sides.

The box she has is about 5 1/2 inches deep.  After I'd added more litter (to about 4 inches deep), she was covering her poops.  She stopped covering again yesterday.   :(  Since she likes to dig (I'm surprised she hasn't found China yet), and I have to be super-careful to not push litter out of the box when I scoop, I'm wondering if I should look into something like this:

https://www.chewy.com/van-ness-high-sides-cat-litter-pan/dp/55358

LARGE   17.5 x 15 x 8.5 inches
GIANT   21.25 x 17.75 x 9 inches

I'm of the belief bigger/longer is always better.  At least that is what works for my bunch.

So do you think the "giant" one would work, or does it need to be longer/wider?

Maybe I should swing by Home Depot tomorrow and see if they have something (plastic boxes) that would work . . .  I just checked their website.  Never mind.

I got the longest I could find, because of my side drillers.  I was surprised to read that longer, not taller, was the fix.  Go figure.

To answer your question, since Miss Kitty isn't a side-driller, I think the size you are looking at is just fine!

The Home Depot in my area, still carriers Sterilite boxes.  They may have taller ones, that don't have the "dip" in the bottom.  I assume you are looking for a box with tall sizes, due to the "digging to China."

Tall sides so I can have 4" of litter and not have to worry about scooping the litter over the side, and to keep it in when she exits.  She pees next to the side, or near a corner, or wherever she feels like it, so I'd like longer and wider as well, though I don't know if giving her more room will get her to pee more towards the middle of the box (as opposed to next to the side).

Corner pee isn't so bad... unless they shoot over the edge of the box.   Silly7
To put your mind at ease... that happens very rarely at my house.  Of course it will happen now that i said that!

Corner pee (or side pee) may not be bad, but it's not easy to scoop!

My only issue with corner and side pee is when the bottom of the litter pan, isn't even all the way across.  I have to dig ever so carefully, so I don't break up the clumps.  Ticks me off.  So much so, that the new Sterilite boxes are being tossed into the garbage, instead of washed and re-used.  I bought them online, so I didn't know about the uneven bottoms.  I also bought 12.  Grrrrr
