Powdered cellulose is purified, mechanically disintegrated cellulose prepared by processing alpha cellulose obtained as a pulp from fibrous plant material. In other words, sawdust.

Another one of those controversial ingredients.  I avoid it.  I'd rather err on the safe side.

Sawdust of Pine Tree!
I won a bet on this when somebody wouldn't believe they could put this stuff as the 2nd Main ingredient in "prescription" scam food.

(Cross-posting:)

"There are various forms of powdered cellulose available from trees like pine and beech to bamboo and cotton. By and large, the cellulose used in petfood applications is derived from pine trees. The ingredient starts its journey in the pulping mills, the same mills used to produce paper. The pulp is made into long continuous sheets and rolled just like paper stock going to the local newspaper. However, cellulose intended for food and feed is ground through specially-designed hammer mills, then sized to certain particle lengths in giant "ball-mills."  http://www.petfoodindustry.com/Columns/Ingredient_Issues/2376.html

I just sent this link, along with the Dog Food Project link, to my friend (the one I've mentioned before).  She has a dog with kidney issues that they are feeding SD, and the SD has finally become expensive enough that she's looking for a better alternative.

It will be interesting to see what she has to say... if she actually reads it.

At one time   :-[  I fed our dogs a "light" food.  Sawdust was one of the ingredients.  I think that is fairly common in light foods, because it gives the feeling of being full.

Seems I'm either trying to kill the furkids by over-feeding, or kill them by feeding commercial food.   :'(
