Yum Yum YUMMY sardines!!
« on: October 14, 2012, 11:17:23 AM »
I have often seen feeding cats sardines once or twice a week recommended for the omega oils. I decided to try my girls on them today. They went BERSERK!

I am happy to offer them this treat on Sundays. Because of SK's struvite history, she will get only half an ounce a week. TC and LC will each have a full ounce. I'll have the rest on a cracker or two. ;D

My son likes smoked herrings. Eat2 Even if he gives them a whole can of their own, the cats eat them so fast ThxGiv6 they'll come jumping all over him wanting his. He just goes outside now when he wants some.

LOL!  When I eat a can of tuna for lunch, I have to go outside on the porch, with the door closed to open the can and eat it, because I don't let my cats, especially Struvite Kitty, have tuna.

But still....when I come back in I barely step inside when they smell the tuna on me and come swarming  funny2

Stupid question.  If cats aren't supposed to be fed fish ...why sardines?

Same thing......http://www.littlebigcat.com/nutrition/why-fish-is-dangerous-for-cats/

feeding sardines once a week is okay though.
Also make sure they are packed in water, not oil or anything else.

I hesitated a long time over the sardines, too, for the very reasons I've always avoided fish.

Sardines, human food, are not the same poor quality as what is put into cat food. And they are rich in the omega oils cats need.  I have never fed fishy cat foods to my cats, nor do I ever give them human tuna.  But, I think an ounce of sardine (half ounce for SK), packed in water, no salt or spices added, once a week should be okay.  And I pick the bones out. :)

It may be less than once a week.  Maybe every other Sunday if it causes me too much worry.  But I've got two who don't like the fish oil.  I haven't tried the krill oil yet.  Supposedly that is less fishy.  If they like that I won't need to give them the sardines as often as once a week.  I'll drop it to once a month maybe.

I don't eat sardines, or any fish for that matter. From what i have been reading, sardines are naturally high in salt, is this true?  :-\

Yes.  Which is another reason to give them only once a week.  And only one ounce per cat. Perhaps, with all this bad publicity, I ought to rethink giving them sardines at all.....but...they are used widely by the members of the raw forum I frequent, to blance the omega 3.

Here is one reason why:

I saw an article that described how to reduce the salt content:
