Black Friday
« on: November 22, 2011, 05:49:15 AM »
There has been alot of discussion, in the news, on the radio, regarding the retail workers, of the various big name stores, that open at midnight on Thanksgiving.  It cuts their TG short, not to mention, not much sleep. If ya ever thought, about the time it takes, to get ready for work, and travel to work, and be ready to open the doors at midnight.  They are prob starting at 10pm.  They also don't make much money.  What are your thoughts on this?

What exactly, is the purpose, of making the workers, and the shoppers, come in at midnight, just to get great deals? Can they not give shoppers the same great prices, if they open at 6am on Friday.  Is the retail world going to give them a 15 yd penalty or half the distance to the goal line, if they don't open at midnight????  >:(

They want to be FIRST to be open.  Get the customers in for the "deals" and hope they buy more.
As long as people shop, the stores will keep doing it.

I think its ridiculous, if you cant get your shopping done in normal hours then there is something wrong.
The store I work in recently went 24hrs, and I think it ridiculous too!!!

I happen to work at a retail store (Kohls to be precise) and they are opening at midnight... I've been told it's to maximize sales potential. And I have to be there at 11:30pm through 7:30am... However I've been told the regular day-shifters will be working 12-hour shifts. So happy I work nights now, as I just got home from my first ever 12 hour shift and I am SO FREAKING BEAT LOL.

They give people the illusion that the stock will sell out if they're not there first and it's fallen for, hook, line & sinker.  Of course sufficient shipments have all been planned in advance.

If something looks "too good to be true", it IS.

Good point abut the $6 coffee maker -- you get what you pay for!   Wouldn't go out there on BF if the stuff was free.

lol, so agreed on the advance-shipping.. This morning was the last of a 7-day string of truck unloads. We have so much back stock, we need back stock space for all the freaking back stock... But like someone above said, long as people shop it, they'll keep doing it... And I have doubts we'll get rid of it all.

On a side note, I really don't want to be out driving when the rest of Anchorage is sure to be doing the same... But hey, I'm going to work... I'll be making money while they spend all theirs, LOL

AK,
Was Black Friday as busy, for you, as expected?

Did anyone here take on the "adventure" of shopping that day?

Busier actually than I expected... Checkout lines literally wrapping around the back of the store to the other side, it's madness trying to replenish the sales floor when nobody wants to move out of the way... Not to mention the stuff on my cart was disappearing before I could even get to where I was supposed to drop it off! But I actually had a lot of fun, guess I just made the best of it because it seemed I was the only one LOL. I got there about 1.5 hours before we opened so I missed the mad rush and 99% of the road traffic... Plus I got to shop before everyone else :p -- This made me happy :) -- That and we broke the black friday sales record for our store, some $640k or something close... #8 in all of Kohl's stores. It was cool :D

Missed your response somehow, AK.  Glad you were able to purchase some bargains and had a good time at work on Black Friday.   :D

Yeah I work there hehe... Best job I've ever had. I don't buy too much though because generally what they have (that I'd be interested in) I tend to find at least 20% cheaper at other places ...
