Cat nip for indigestion!
« on: November 04, 2012, 07:36:09 AM »
Many of you have been following SK's success with her diet change and the elimination of her constant regurgitation. I've kept that thread updated but I think the info is worthy of it's own thread!

At first I thought maybe I was just imagining things, it was just a fluke.  But now I am sure, a bud of dried cat nip really can help a cat who has tummy upset/indigestion!

SK had what I though was a permanently ruined digestion from years of Hills c/d kibble. Even months after a diet change to a canned food, she was still having trouble.  She's on about 50% raw now and that has helped tremendously.

However every now and then I still see signs of tummy upset in her.  She will start to lick her lips and swallow, and crouch in a certain posture.  Sometimes she will start doing this weird snuffling thing, then jump down and vomit.

I used to give her pepcid when I saw these signs, but a couple of weeks ago, for some reason I decided to give her a bud of cat nip instead (I grow my own, and always cut off the first growth in buds in early summer. Apparently they are very yummy).  It worked!

Since then there have been two other instances, one just this morning, where I could see she was feeling iffy in her tummy. My heart fell, thinking her long spell would be ended, but I gave her a bud, she ate it, and presto, symptoms gone!

I am a sad panda.
My catnip died off before budding... it just got too hot here.
I've brought in the surviving sprouts, in hopes of wintering it indoors, but I don't think I'll see any buds.

Leaves and stems are good too. I have no idea if the active ingredient is more or less or the same in leaves, stems or buds.  But she LIKES the buds, and doens't show much interest in eating the leaves, so I am saving the choicest buds for her!  :)

This is interesting!

Catnip is very distantly related to marijuana, and both have been used as anti-nausea medications for people. It would make sense if it had a similar affect on cats.

The majority of our felines look kinda bored with catnip.  The others... bounce off walls.  Kinda DOES sound like marijuana users.   Bumpurr1
