What Is Going On With Lola?
« on: September 04, 2015, 07:58:06 PM »
She had her last dose of antibiotics (from dental) yesterday.

Breakfast was normal.

I got home 3 1/2 hours LATE to feed lunch.  I also came home to 7 different spit-up watery "piles."  One had a bit of dark hair in it.  The odds of that one belonging to Roxy are very high.  She is known to spit up, if meals are longer than 8 hours apart.

Lola had to be enticed (added Vets Best) to eat lunch.  But she did eat all of it though.

In the last 2 1/2 hours she has been drinking water frequently.  She also has spit up "pools" of water twice now.  Her lunch meal has stayed down.
Now, she is sitting in a corner.

I know what all these signs usually mean, but...  she just got off a round of antibiotics and had a physical and a slew of test two weeks ago.  An ER visit in my area... previous experience tells me to make it a last resort.

Is there any possibility a very late lunch could make her this ill?

Could also be a delayed reaction to the antibiotics.  What med was it?

She had a Penicillin B injection and I was sent home with Orbax Oral Suspension

Orbax, oh yes. I would go with wait and see.  Will you be around to keep an eye on her tonight and tomorrow?

Is she getting probiotic?

That seems like a lot of antibiotics.  ??
I can't find anything about Penicillin B injection, via Google.

I took her off the probiotics during the two weeks of antibiotics.  Something about them working against each other.  ??
Yes, I will be home tonight.

My inexpert opinion is she's having some upset due to 2 weeks on antibiotics.  The issue with probitoics and antibiotics is that the antibiotics will kill ALL bacteria, even the good ones, so the probiotics need to be given at a different time than the antibiotics, that's all.  While Mazy cat was on clavamox (after her extractions about the same time as Lola, but only a week) I just made sure her probiotics were given more  a number of hours before or after the antibiotic.

Her internal flora is just all messed up now.  I'd get her back on the probiotic, feed milder meats, just chicken breast even, for a few days, maybe even go boneless for a couple of days,  and see how she does.

PS I searched injectable penicillin for cats and came up with hits for Penicillin G, not B.

Thanks for the info.  It gives me something to hold onto!

This may sound horrible.  At this point... unless she gets obviously a lot worse...  I'm not taking her to ER.
I'm having flashbacks of Lucky's last days.  The ER and regular vet visits did her no good.  NONE of them relieved her pain and/or discomfort.  Tests and more tests... as she slowly and miserably withered away.

Do you think Rad Cat chicken is a good choice for her... or actual chicken from the grocery store?

I'm thinking back to a time Mazy cat was on antibiotics, again it was clavamox it was baytril and I hadn't been feeding raw very long...  I can't remember when or what for, I think she had a UTI...but she had some terrible tummy upset from it for a few days. This was when she was still eating home made raw. I think this was also before I started probiotics.  In fact this may have been when I started probiotics.

I put her on nothing but plain raw chicken breast for a couple of days, chopped very fine with the scissors right before I put it in front of her. No supplements or anything, I didn't worry about balancing, since it was only for a couple of days.

On the other hand, if Lola isn't used to getting ANY grocery store meat, it may be too different for her system to handle in it's delicate condition, and Rad Cat chicken and nothing but, for a few days may work as well or better.

I've looked it up in the cat journals. Regarding the above post, it was baytril (part of the orbax family) and she had a bad tummy from it.

She continued to have Rad Cat chicken in the morning, By Nature turkey&chicken (the only canned she could tolerate in those days was the turkey&chicken formula) for her canned parts and nothing but plain chicken breast for the rest of her daily intake. For 10 days.

Thank you SO much for that info on Mazy!  I don't think any of our cats have ever been given an antibiotic.  So I had no idea of the reaction possibilities.

There were no signs of diarrhea in the litter boxes today.  I have Lola locked in the room with me, so I can monitor her output.   She is sleeping in a chair right now.  At least she moved up from a corner on the floor.
