Flea and Tick Treatment Recommendations?
« on: February 24, 2019, 04:26:11 PM »
Since Mom's not as mobile as she used to be, she has someone come to walk her dog a couple of times a week.  The walker's contract requires that the dog be treated for fleas and ticks, which I can understand -- she's not going to want to risk bringing unwanted pests to other clients.

Mika's due for her Bravecto treatment, but Mom is complaining about how often it's needed ( I think every 3 months?) and is remembering that her previous dog got a treatment that lasted (in her memory) for 8 months.  I think it was Frontline.

I have to do some research, but does anyone have a recommendation as to which treatment lasts a long time, is effective but is also not super-toxic?  The dog has highly elevated liver enzymes, so her liver's going to have to process any treatment that she gets.

Thanks in advance!  :-* :-* :-*

EDIT:  I just did a super-quick search and Bravecto is every 3 months, Frontline has to be applied monthly.

Does the walker contract insist on Frontline, Bravecto, etc?  Or would a more holistic and non-toxic choice be acceptable?

I don't have a copy of the contract, but if I remember correctly, I don't think she specified what kind of flea/tick treatment to use.

I was thinking of this for Misa...

or...

Thanks, Lola.   :-*  I am very uncomfortable with using essential oils on/around pets.  Some are not safe, and the person using them really needs to know what they're doing.  As for the other site, garlic is a no-no for dogs as it can cause anemia.  As for the other things . . . the dog gets baths now and then, so those options would need to be re-applied.  I'm trying to keep this as simple as possible for Mom, as well as effective for the dog without really slamming her system.

Believe me, I'd love more natural options.  I just don't know that Mom would remember to re-apply them, and that's assuming that the walker would find them acceptable.   :(

I did a little more research and found the following articles on Raising Dogs Naturally magazine's site:

Mom gave her the Bravecto yesterday after she found on a tick on the dog.  As much as I dislike those preventatives, esp. in this case because of the dog's liver issues, it needed to be done, esp. now that flea and tick season is starting.  yuk

Mom did tell me that I'll have to get the Bravecto for her next time (she thought it was really expensive).  I pointed out that when you break out the cost over 3 months, which is how long it lasts, it's not that bad of a price, but I have a note on my calendar to order it online in a couple of months.  Though I can't find it on Amazon, so I may have to go a different route.

I used to get the frontline plus from my vet for my mother's cats because it was so much less expensive than anywhere else.

Is Mika still getting a dog walker every day?

The walker was never daily -- due to finances, it's twice a week.  It looks like Bravecto might be cheaper on Chewy than from the place Mom got it this time (different vet clinic from the one she'd been going to).  I just don't have a Chewy account.
