Title: Modem question
Post by: Pookie on July 07, 2018, 11:06:57 PM
I'm thinking of buying my own modem instead of paying the monthly fee to the phone/internet company.  Question:  would it be safe to buy a used one from Amazon, or is it better to buy new?

Thank you!

I'd get new, or at least a factory refurb from the manufacturer. I don't think I'd trust someone in Amazon marketplace though.

I'd get a new one. The microchips in routers and modems do tend to burn out over extended use, so I wouldn't go for one that has a questionable amount of hours on it already.

Another consideration, be sure your ISP allows third-party modems. Don't know if it's still the case but I know used to, some ISPs wouldn't allow any but their own setup to be used on their networks.

I vote for new also.
My internet company provides a list of compatible modems.  Yours probably does also.   :-\
