Title: Leonard...
Post by: Lola on February 07, 2013, 01:13:20 PM
Leonard's 11th birthday would have been tomorrow.   He's been gone 6 months... seems like yesterday still.  I sure do miss my boy!  Looking forward to the day that my thoughts of him make me smile... instead of ripping my heart out over and over again.    I know you all get it...

Six months already, my goodness.  I know how you feel. I started to tear up before I even opened this thread.

I was talking about my sweet boy this morning to someone and before I knew it the tears were streaming down my face.  Just typing this....

Hugs to us both.  xxx

My sweet boy, Leonard, has been gone a year today.  A year.  Sure doesn't seem that long... still feels recent.  The good news is... Lola (his buddy) is doing MUCH better.  She definitely changed, but at least she is no longer angry.

I told Jenkins he could make this date a happier one... if he would let me hug him.  Just once.  Not gonna happen.  Maybe next year...

Unfortunately, I know everyone here knows the same sadness allllll too well.  :(

Adopting Jenkins (his gotcha day was in Nov) really was a good thing for me.  He looks SO much like Leonard, but his personality is NOTHING like him.  I think the combination works out perfectly.  I can "channel" Leonard through Jenkins.  Ok... not really.

Petting, talking, and playing with Jenkins often reminds me of happy times with Leonard.  I can remember Leonard with a smile, rather than gut wrenching sadness.  It is kinda like if Jenkins was Leonard's son... that kind of thing. I see some of Leonard's likeness, but love Jenkins for who he is.

Gotta run.  Someone is at the door.  They are wearing white coats...

That's kind of the same thing that I did with Vlad. Although he only resembles Dannyboy a little bit, BRTs act a lot like Airedales since Airedales were one of the first 2 breeds that went into developing them.

In my case, looking at another Airedale would have torn me up too much, and I know I'd have expected too much out of a new one. That wouldn't have been right to the  dog since Dannyboy had every good quality imaginable, and most Airedales don't act exactly like he did. He was definitely one of those special ones that you're lucky to have even once in your life. But I still see a lot of him in Vlad's attitude and demeanor.

Has he let you hug him yet?  Silly7

No hugs yet.
He used to only sleep with me, if Lilly (his BFF) was between me and him.  Then he advanced to sleeping with me, no matter where Lilly was on the bed.  Now he will sleep with me, when Lilly isn't even in the room.  For some reason, the bed is his safe place.  I can pet him quite a bit, when he is on the bed.  Maybe because he is half asleep?  I can scratch his ears and under his chin.  As long as I go slowly and don't make any quick moves... he is good.
Pets outside the bedroom are a whole new ballgame!

Now that I think about it... the cats that allow me to hug them... not all enjoy it as much as I do.  :)

Wow that is really great progress!  You know, it's funny, Mazy cat was the same way, the first place I was allowed to pet her, the first time I ever heard her purr either, was on my bed.

How long did that take?

Months.  Over a year. I risked losing a hand for the first 18 months or so she was here.  Then she started coming to bed with me and the other cats.  She chose the spot on the opposite side of my pillow from where Ootay and Tolly slept (they always slept spooned together, but in my arms.) Bibbs under the covers, on my legs (if I let her) or in the crook of my knees.

The first time I woke and found her there I was so amazed I reached out to pet her and got bit for my efforts. But gradually over time she started to allow a brief stroke. She was more willing to allow me to press my face against her rather than my hands, and that was how I first heard her purr, a very quiet thready sound. (she purrs out loud now).

It took her about three years before she got on me on the couch.  Then she claimed my chest, right under my chin, forcing me to straight arm my book over me to read.  funny2

Thanks for the info.  Guess we are within the "timeline," with Jenkins...as far as Mazy and Roxy standards.
