Veterinarian's Oath
« on: December 22, 2011, 02:12:03 PM »
I've seen it mentioned a couple times about the oath vet's take, and wanted to share this.  Unlike the oath that doctors that treat people take, it doesn't specifically say "do no harm":  http://www.littlebigcat.com/catswalk-newsletter/catswalk-newsletter-august-2009/   and scroll down to #3.

It has since been revised early this year for vets that are graduating:  http://www.littlebigcat.com/blog/veterinarians-oath-revised/ but still doesn't really say anything about doing no harm.  At least it mentions prevention and their welfare . . . I guess that's a start.

Too bad no Biology (apparently ever)  is required  Doh1

Strange how not all are held to this (not that there's actually anyone to enforce it, but I digress.)
<<<through the protection of animal health and welfare, the prevention>>>

What about the poor Vet who has to start out at a mcvet chain or at a plain bad vet with their own private practice? They'd get fiired over it.  They need Somebody needs to address the ones who are already in control as well. Haven't they done enough harm?

Hi CC,

If you mean the vets already in practice, Dr. Jean Hofve had a petition running to get those vets to agree to the updated oath.  She mentions it in her article:   http://www.littlebigcat.com/blog/veterinarians-oath-revised/ but I know the petition is closed.

Thanks for posting that, Pookie  :)   Would loooove to know who & where the ones who enthusiastically signed it, are, so clients can flock to them. Odds are they don't declaw, or sell 'food" or over-vaccinate.... wonder how many are out there?  Am sooo tempted to ask Dr. Jean the ballpark number of signers. Wonder how many are in, say, California compared to my area (extremely provincial)... probably 30-1  :(
